Update: Baby Madison was born on Wednesday Sept 30 at lbs. and 15oz at 1103 am. The only significant issue after delivery was some slight difficulty breathing which is being controlled by high flow nasal canula. Ashley has recovered well. Madi is being given a medication to keep the heart valve that closes after birth open due to the Dr’s fears that the coarctation will become worse if it closes. Her surgery will hopefully be in the middle of next week, Her recovery will mainly depend on her.
My family and I thank you for all the continued thoughts and prayers and everything else our local brotherhood has done for us we can never thank you enough. Thanks again Matt.

I’ve been handed an enormous opportunity to help not only a great friend, but a brother and his family that are in need. One of our own from Ft Walton Beach, Local 2601, Matt Baxley and his wife Ashley found out that they were pregnant with their second child. Upon finding out the sex of the baby, the ultrasound also reveled that the baby is having great complications.

The family was then referred to a specialist in Pensacola where they learned that new Baby Madison has been diagnosed with cystic hygroma (a mass of fluid build up on the back of her neck), a heart condition where one valve is almost completely shut and cannot pump enough blood throughout her body resulting in full body edema, she also has fluid on her lungs, and a chromosome disorder. One week later the results of the amniocentesis revealed Madison’s chromosome disorder is Turner’s Syndrome, a disorder in which her female organs will never develop and she will never be able to have children.

They have been given a limited amount of options from their doctor & Madison ’s chance of survival is very slim. If she is delivered at a specialty hospital in Atlanta , she will have to have open heart surgery immediately after delivery. This will give Madison a 90 percent chance of survival! The other option was termination of the pregnancy, but the Baxley’s are a strong willed family and have decided that they would rather go bankrupt to give their daughter a fighting chance at life. Unfortunately this opportunity comes at a great cost to this family.

The approximate cost of delivery in Atlanta is going to cost the Baxley family somewhere between $15,000 to $20,000. My wife and I have agreed to donate a minimum of $10 a month to the Baxley’s despite our own bills and pregnancy expenses. We are asking that if any brother or sister feels compelled to help this family, please do so. Despite the economic situation, Madison needs our help. Whether it’s a few extra dollars or prayers, keep the history of the “brotherhood” alive. We have until October to prepare for Madison ’s arrival.

I have some updates on the Baxley family that I am sure everyone has been waiting for. First off, on behalf of this family, I would like to thank each and everyone who has joined in on the support. Trust me, words will never fully explain the gratitude and relief that they have.

Ashley is now 30 weeks pregnant. They will be going to Atlanta during the week of August 24th for consultations with all of the doctors, and are still expecting to deliver during the last week of September. Thus far, Madison hasn’t had any status changes.

I have recieved a couple of requests from different locals asking for the names and addresses of the hospitals the Baxley’s will be at. Ashley will deliver at Northside Hospital (1000 Johnson Ferry Rd NE, ATL GA, 30342), and Madison will take an ambulance ride to Egleston Children’s Hopsital (1405 Clifton Rd NE, ATL GA, 30322) for her operation.

I have spoke with Shannon and DJ Stone about the Thunder Beach Firehouse Run, and we have decided that this year’s benefit will be for the Baxley Family. We have also set up a benefit account at the Okaloosa County Teacher’s Federal Credit Union for the Baxley Family. To donate, make checks payable to the Madi Baxley Fund. Any checks recieved at the local 2601 mailbox will be deposited into this account.
